so on friday ive been to the princes' islands ("[kızıl] adalar"), a chain of nine islands in the sea of marmara. during the byzantine and ottoman empire all kinds of royalties have been exiled on the islands, hence princes' islands, but after that the islands became a popular summer resort for wealthy ppl. now many greeks, armenians and jewish ppl are living there. one of the resident actually told us that every turk should have lived on one of the islands so to experience this multicultural society & to become more tolerant. i thought it to be really nice.
we went with the ferry from kabataş to the biggest island, "büyükada" (last station), which took us about 1 1/2 hours & 2,80YTL (one way) to get there.
the ferry trip was reaaaally nice. weve been real lucky with the weather, the sun was shining all the way and it seemed like the whole bosporus was covered with nothing but dancing little stars...the island itself was impressive to a certain extent, because all those summer residences were so beautiful (id like to have one for the summer as well, geez!) and as motorized vehicles arent allowed - so locomotion (fortbewegung? Oo) only by foot, bike or horse-drawn carriages - it was really peaceful and quiet, but in the end there/they are just houses you know, so you can easily get bored of them soon.
however, we (group of germans and italians from the hostel) went off the street and made our way through the copse, up the hill in the direction of this historic greek orphanage (was originally built as a hotel by a french architect, now its the largest timber-frame construction in the world - meaning no single nail inside! anybody knows its name??!). during that i got a lil scared i havta admit, but in the end it was really really worth it.
the view was just İNCREDİBLE. we sat there and we all could have watched for hours. nature, those tiny little houses and the big blue sea in the background. seagulls, ships, the wind and did i mention the sea? a picture-book scene, picturesque all the way.
and i experienced the most beautiful sunset ive ever had so far. there are no words to describe it, simply amazing.
i hope that someday everybody of you can make such an experience if you hadnt have it (grammar..). sorry for not offering any pictures, but im working with a mac here, so no photos for now...
all the best,
